Scholarships
The Club provides scholarships to students studying horticulture at St. Louis Community College (Meramec). A Member of the Board of Directors contacts the horticulture program early in the fall to make applications available to students. Once they apply for the scholarships, they are reviewed by a Board committee. Recipients are announced and presented at the Clubs’ annual holiday party in December.
Annual Plant Sale
One of our important functions is to hold an annual plant sale in late April each year. Club members, neighbors and others contribute plants from their own gardens. Many types and varieties of plants are available including Hosta, Missouri natives, iris and others. Members and volunteers dig donated plants and transfer them to other volunteers who pot them so they are ready for sale. The sale is held at the Webster Groves Rec Center over 1 1/2 days, all day on Friday and a ½ day on Saturday until plants are gone.
Garden Tours
There are usually 1 or 2 garden tours a year. The tours vary and may be held in the gardens of members or in friends of members’ gardens. They have also occurred in an outstanding public garden. Examples of these latter past tours have included a guided tour through Bellefontaine Cemetery to view its wonderful gardens and a visit to the Missouri Botanical Garden to view the Chihuly exhibit. These tours usually occur during May, June or July.
Garden Lectures
Six months of the year the Club has guest speakers with varied expertise in topics related to gardening and horticulture. Recent topics such as the following have been explored: Organic Gardening; Propagating Plants at Home; and Shutterbee: Citizen Science in your Neighborhood.
